Description

This plant stand is not a recent piece, but actually one of the first pieces ever built by the founders of Dryad Studios (before it was Dryad Studios!)
Seen before in one of the only pics we still had of the piece
Tall and short bookcase stands by DryadStudios

The following is his write up on having the odd pleasure of an early piece coming full circle;
-------------------------------

A cryptic phone message on the answering machine finally led to a conversation with a Dr. in upstate NY...... I hate being asked a lot of off-the-wall questions over the phone, with no frame of reference. The line of questioning was leading to establishing a long, long ago business relationship with several people and entities connected to the Roycroft Inn.
That involvement had provided us with some very enviable credentials, but little economic reward. It was our introduction to the world of ..." if it ain't in writing....it ain't"........ High Rollers of low character. It was a crash course in the value of our developing talents....and the need to guard those talent’s fruits carefully.

The result of the conversation was to establish Paternity for the two pieces of furniture in these pictures. INCREDIBLE...these two pieces are among THE FIRST FIVE PIECES OF FURNITURE I EVER BUILT. It was about 1987, and somehow my intention to build Arts & Crafts Furniture connected with some people at the Roycroft who needed reproductions/prototypes built. These reproductions were used to re-acquire the Copyright on the Roycroft Orb-and-Cross Trademark Symbol., and anchored me front-and-center in the Annals of the Arts & Crafts Movement.

I built these with almost zero woodworking skills. I had no drawings or measurements....only a picture in an old catalog. The Tall Magazine Stand is a complex interplay of angles.....it is a most difficult piece.

They now reside in a collector's house in Upstate NY, near East Aurora where the Roycroft Campus and Inn were located. I will send the owner a notarized statement detailing their construction and the circumstances surrounding their commissioning.

KIND THANKS FOR THE CURRENT OWNERS FOR SHARING THESE IMAGES!

From what I've seen of your work all of them are keepers, they look like the solid things that you get passed down.
